Further information about Hocheppan Castle and the guided tours can be found here

The castle's most famous tale, is that of the golden skittles game. One day, some young shepherds who were grazing their goats near the castle curiously entered the ruins. There they found a hidden, rusty iron door which opened after a while. On their search, the little boys came across a long, dark corridor, which they followed. Curious, they crawled inside and came across a chamber. In the chamber, they discovered a golden skittles set, which they immediately wanted to take with them. But as soon as they began to carry the golden skittles out, the earth shook and the walls cracked. In their fear, the little boys dropped the skittles and ran off in a panic, but were unable to find the exit. It was only the next morning, when the bells of St. Paul's rang, that the iron doors opened and they were able to escape. Since then, the golden skittles have never been seen again.
