Fair and church day in honor of St. Martin

St. Martin’s Market

When the temperatures drop and the days get shorter again, a change is needed. The best example of such a change on dreary, gray November days is the colorful Martini Market in Girlan, which takes place every year on St. Martin's Day. For the inhabitants of Girlan, Eppan and the surrounding area, St. Martin's Day is a major holiday, as it coincides with a name day, church day and the end of the harvest season. If that's not a reason to celebrate!

11th November 2024

Girlan | Eppan

The name day of the church's patron saint is celebrated on 11.11. with a huge fair.

Martini” has always been a major holiday for farmers. The farmers' harvest was over at this time and the shepherds, harvesters and salt workers received their wages. A good reason to take a day off, go shopping, meet people and enjoy good wine and food! In the past, the Martinmarkt was also known far and wide as a cattle market. Animals were sold and fattened up for slaughter. This is why the Martinimarkt still has the nickname “the last judgment”.

When the market traders pack up the remaining autumnal delicacies on the stalls, it's time to celebrate in the village's countless wine cellars. You can only marvel at how big the “underground” Girlan is.
