- EGNO
Egno from Eppan (1248 - 1273)
Egno bishop and last count of Eppan
June 1, 2023 marks the 750th anniversary of the death of Egno from Eppan (1273). Bishop Egno was the last scion of the Counts of Eppan. With him the Counts of Eppan died out in 1273.
This occasion is placed in a historically significant light on a supra-municipal scale. With several cultural, scientific and social actions, it is also intended to contribute to the knowledge of history in the historical Tyrol and to the cultivation of the culture of remembrance.
Egno from Eppan
Egno of Eppan (* in the 12th or 13th century; † 1273 in Padua) was prince-bishop of Bressanone and Trento. He came from the noble family of the Counts of Eppan at Hocheppan Castle. In 1233 he was canon in Trento. In 1239 he was with Emperor Frederick II in Padua. On May 20, 1240, probably at his instigation, Egno was appointed Prince-Bishop of Bressanone by King Conrad IV, and in the document he received the title of Duke. Because Egno sided with the Emperor in the dispute between Frederick II and Pope Gregory IX, he was excommunicated in 1240. In the autumn of the same year there was a war with the Counts of Tyrol, which was ended by peace treaty the following year. Egno had to cede all his fiefs to Count Albert III of Tyrol and his son-in-law Otto of Andechs-Merania.
After the reconciliation with Meinhard III of Gorizia, he at least got back the castle of Veldes. Under the following Pope Innocent IV, Egno changed his tactics and became loyal to the Pope. The latter then installed him as administrator in 1247 and as prince-bishop of Trento in 1250. His reign was marked by constant conflicts with the Meinhardines and Ezzelino III da Romano. On a journey to Rome Egno died in Padua. With his death the dynasty of the Counts of Eppan became extinct.
