Chagall | Picasso

The exhibition, entitled Chagall Picasso - "Animals in the Graphic Arts of the 20th Century", brings together a selection of prints by two of the most famous artists of the last century.
On display are 67 works: 31 etchings and aquatint by Picasso, 34 etchings by Chagall and two graphics with self-portraits of the authors.

The exhibition project, curated by Michele Tavola, is a tribute to the figure of Ambroise Vollard (1865-1939), one of the most important Parisian gallery owners and art dealers in the period between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Century and patron of the two cycles of works exhibited.

Marc Chagall began work on La Fontaine's Les Fables in 1926. In these works, Chagall emphasizes the strong mythological and universal component of the narrative, the human aspect of the animals that reflect human behavior. The war and the sudden death of Vollard had interrupted the development of the publishing project, which ended only in 1952 thanks to the publisher Tériade. In the Lanserhaus, 34 of the 100 graphics by Chagall used to illustrate the two volumes of the book are on display.

In 1936, the Paris gallery owner asked Pablo Picasso to illustrate a selection of passages from the Histoire Naturelle, a monumental work consisting of 36 volumes dedicated to natural history, compiled by the Count of Buffon over a period of half a century and published in the meantime in France from 1749 to 1789. The Franco-Spanish painter created his own bestiary and experimented for the first time with the aquatint technique, which allowed him to achieve special pictorial effects.
