Ice Age in Eppan
On the trail of the fascinating ice holes in Eppan
Every Monday there is a guided hike to the extraordinary ice holes. Our expert tells exciting stories about legends, myths, places of power and the admirable vegetation. Starting from the Eppan Tourism Association, the short hike goes via the Gleifchurch to the famous Devil's Chair, on to Moos-Schulthaus Castle and then to the ice holes.
Particularly worth seeing is the Gleifchurch, which sits enthroned on a hill in St. Michael. It is immediately recognisable by its twin baroque towers. Directly behind it is the so-called Devil's Chair. This is a depression in the rock that was created when the glacial ice melted during the Ice Age. Legend has it that a devil used to roam this area. A girl who was still out at a late hour was invited by the devil to go for a walk. When she did not respond to his further wishes, the devil pushed the girl with all his might into this rock. This is where the name of the devil's chair comes from.
Especially in summer, the ice holes are a popular destination due to the cool temperatures. It is a natural phenomenon that occurs in view of the rocks. Warm air flows into the upper openings, cools down there and escapes as cold air from the lower openings.
The informative tour ends with a relaxing coffee break. Finally, the group returns to the village centre of St. Michael | Eppan.
