Wine village by conviction
Girlan | Eppan
Sun, wine and cellar worlds
The wine village of Girlan | Eppan lies on a sun-drenched plateau, embedded in the vineyard landscape of Eppan. Thanks to the fertile soil, vines and cellars have always been part of the village's appearance, as have mansion-like houses with archways, bay windows and stone-framed windows.
Eye-catchers in Girlan | Eppan are also the dreamy courtyards, historic buildings and sunny panoramic views. The Wilde Mann Bühel, or the hiking trail from Schreckbichl to Sigmundskron are just a few points to enjoy the magnificent views of the Bolzano basin, the Schlern ridge, as well as the sunny plateau of Ritten and the Tschögglberg.
Already settled in prehistoric times, Girlan was first mentioned as "Curilan" in the 11th century. The parish church, which adorns the historic centre of the village, has its origins in the 13th century and is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. In his honour, the traditional St. Martin's Market takes place in Girlan on 11 November every year (unless it is a Sunday). This Girlan holiday has existed for over 200 years and fills the idyllic alleys of Girlan with countless visitors who enjoy autumnal delicacies at the stalls, try on clothes or simply stroll by. Many farmers also celebrate the successful completion of the harvest on this day and toast it with a glass or two of Girlan wine.
In Girlan | Eppan everything else revolves around wine. For example, an educational wine trail has been laid out, which starts in the centre of Girlan | Eppan and teaches everything about grape varieties and the taste of grapes. Various events, such as the Girlan Cellar Festival, the Wine Summer in Girlan or the Last Ferry, also bear witness to the enthusiasm for the noble drop. The latter takes place in mid-October in a very special setting. The "last" grapes are transported to the village square on a cart and pressed into must in front of an audience.
Every four years, at the beginning of September, the underground Girlan takes centre stage. The cellar festival is an excellent opportunity to get to know its widely ramified cellar worlds and to convince oneself of the greatness of the village below ground. It is often said that in earlier times Girlan was bigger below ground than above.
As part of eppanAdvent, the WeinweltWeihnacht concludes the year in Girlan | Eppan. The Christmas decorations made of old wine barrels are already an eye-catcher in the picturesque Girlan alleys during the day, and as darkness falls, the night is atmospherically illuminated.
